Cinema VinesVijay Sethupathi has expressed a keen interest in starring in a Hollywood remake of his 2024 Tamil blockbuster Maharaja, even offering to play a role without charging a fee. The actor revealed that director Nithilan Saminathan has already shared the plot of the sequel, Maharaja 2, with him and that the story is set to continue.
During the audio launch of his upcoming film Baththa, Sethupathi spoke about the developments surrounding the Hollywood adaptation. He said he had personally reached out to the producer to confirm whether the remake was indeed in the works and, upon learning that it was, offered his services for free if a role could be secured. The actor described the possibility of the film being adapted for a Western audience as a pleasant surprise and a source of happiness, noting that he has long wanted to work in an American production.
When reporters asked whether the remake could feature Matthew McConaughey, Sethupathi neither confirmed nor denied the speculation. He simply pointed out that the name had been linked to the project in the media, but no official casting decisions had been announced.
In addition to discussing the remake, the star praised Saminathan’s writing and expressed his affection for the director, crediting him for the opportunity. He also highlighted that Maharaja had become one of the biggest Tamil hits of 2024, with the film’s plot following a barber named Maharaja who reports the disappearance of a dustbin named Lakshmi to the police, leading to a darker investigation.
Produced by The Route, Think Studios and Passion Studios, Maharaja featured a cast that included Anurag Kashyap, Sachana Namidass, Natty Subramaniam and Mamta Mohandas. While the Hollywood remake remains a talking point, Sethupathi confirmed that the sequel’s story has already been shared with him and that he remains optimistic about the franchise’s future.
