Habeebi lands on Sony LIV; Tamil romance hits streaming on Sept. 25

In a move that will bring a fresh wave of Tamil romantic drama to streaming audiences, the film Habeebi is set to launch on Sony LIV on September 25, 2026. The feature, which opened in theatres on June 12, 2026, follows the love story of Abuthahir, played by Esha M, and Nilofar, portrayed by Malavika Manoj. Director Meera Kathiravan has crafted a tale that intertwines personal romance with the broader social fabric of a Tamil Muslim community in southern Tamil Nadu.

The narrative spans four decades, capturing a period when long‑distance communication relied on letters, telephone calls and audio cassettes. It also delves into the migration of community members to Gulf countries and the resulting strain on family bonds. Set in a town near Tirunelveli, the film showcases everyday life within the Muslim enclave, highlighting traditions, handloom craftsmanship, and the generational tensions that arise when modern choices clash with inherited expectations.

Abuthahir’s journey is complicated by his father, Mohammad Yousuf, played by Kasthoori Raja, whose dedication to preserving the family’s handloom legacy adds another layer to the story. Supporting performances from Dhanasree Sudhakaran, Arulkumar and Anusreya Rajan enrich the ensemble, while cinematographer Mahesh Muthuswami and editor Mathi VS capture the period’s aesthetic. Composer Sam C. S. provides a musical backdrop that complements the film’s emotional beats, and art director Appunni Sajan shapes the visual world.

Written by V. S. Mohamed Ameen, Habeebi blends romance with the evolving social and economic realities of its community. After a theatrical run that began in June, the film’s digital release on Sony LIV offers viewers who missed the cinema premiere an opportunity to experience the story from home. Fans of Tamil cinema can look forward to the September 25 launch, where the film will be available to stream in its entirety on the platform.
