The award, presented at the Student Academy Awards ceremony held in partnership with the Toronto International Film Festival, recognizes the film’s standout storytelling among a global field of 2,972 entries from 894 universities and colleges.
Directed by Leon Korzyński, the production stars Indian actor Vipin Sharma in a pivotal antagonist role. Sharma, who has built a career oscillating between Bollywood and international projects, praised the Polish school’s innovative approach to filmmaking. “I am a huge Polish cinema fan. I think they invented the idea of pitching a film in one sentence. So, when I was offered a role in a film from Warsaw Film School, I immediately met the director, Leon Korzyński. I loved the idea behind the film and said yes to it right away! I have also been supporting young filmmakers who are starting their careers. Their enthusiasm and passion are inspiring, and they bravely experiment!” he told the press.
The bronze medal not only crowns the film’s creative team but also opens a pathway to the 99th Academy Awards, where Kamathipura Express is now eligible to compete in the Live Action Short Film category. This marks a significant milestone for a student film that has already garnered international attention.
Sharma’s career highlights include roles in Taare Zameen Par, Gangs of Wasseypur, Maharani, and Dhadak 2, and he recently wrapped shooting on Dev Patel’s directorial debut, Monkey Man. He is also set to appear in The Peasant, an A24-backed medieval revenge thriller that follows a 14th‑century shepherd on a quest for vengeance against mercenaries. The film, A24’s first production shot in India, features an international ensemble including Christian Friedel, Sebastian Bull, and Anasuya Sengupta.
