Cinema VinesAt the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in Ekta Nagar near the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the country’s most influential film personalities. She urged actors and artists to wield their platform responsibly, warning against endorsing products that could harm public health. “When successful artists speak about the benefits of a disciplined lifestyle, millions of children and young people emulate them,” she said. “A true star is the one who spreads light, not darkness.”
In addition to her call on advertising, President Murmu highlighted the need for greater gender representation on National Film Award juries. She stated that women should be guaranteed participation in every regional jury, arguing that a female perspective helps create a more holistic view of cinema. “Incorporating the female perspective in any field makes it possible to form a holistic human outlook,” she remarked.
The president also turned her attention to the welfare of the film industry’s workforce. She appealed to producers and studio heads to respect and provide social security for small‑scale artists, assistants, and newcomers who are still carving out their careers. “Please ensure that the workers, small‑scale artists, assistants, and those struggling to make their mark, who contribute to this economy, receive both respect and social security,” she added, recalling her earlier plea for sensitivity towards every crew member.
During the ceremony, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was presented to veteran actor Anant Nag. The event also celebrated the achievements of 2024’s cinema, with Kartik Aaryan taking home Best Actor for “Chandu Champion,” Yami Gautam honored for her role in “Article 370,” and veteran actor Mammootty among the recipients of major awards.
