The actress, best known for her poignant performance in the 2018 film Sudani from Nigeria, had a career that began in the amateur theatre circles of Kerala when she was just 16 years old.
After nearly twenty years of honing her craft on the amateur stage, Sreedharan transitioned to professional theatre, where she became a respected character actor. Her breakthrough came with K. T. Mohammed’s play Deepasthambham Mahascharyam, a role that cemented her status as a formidable presence in Kerala’s drama scene. She later worked with several prominent drama troupes and was honored with the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award for her overall contribution to theatre.
In 1991, she made her film debut in M. T. Vasudevan Nair’s critically acclaimed film Kadavu. After a long hiatus from cinema, she returned to the silver screen with Sudani from Nigeria, earning widespread acclaim for her natural and heartfelt portrayal of a village woman. Her work in the film earned her the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actress in 2019 and a Special Mention at the National Film Awards.
Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan expressed his sorrow on the social media platform X, writing, “Expressing grief over the demise of renowned theatre-film star Savithri Sreedharan. She, who enriched the theatre stage for decades, secured a place in the hearts of Malayalis through films including ‘Sudani from Nigeria’. She was an artist who amazed audiences with her natural acting.” The tribute reflected the deep respect she commanded among peers and audiences alike.
Reports indicate that Sreedharan had been battling age‑related ailments for some time. Her passing has left a void in both the theatre and film communities, as friends, colleagues, and fans mourn the loss of an artist who brought depth and authenticity to every role she undertook.
