The nomination places the series alongside international contenders such as the UK’s A Thousand Blows, France’s Carême, and Argentina’s Menem, underscoring the universal appeal of stories that blend sport with human resilience.
Set against the backdrop of Jammu and Kashmir, the series follows journalist Sohail and businessman Shishir as they forge a professional football team from scratch. Drawing directly from the real-life journey of the eponymous club, the narrative chronicles their efforts to scout talent, secure funding, and sustain the team amid the region’s challenging political and social climate. While football drives the plot, the show also highlights how the sport opens doors for young players seeking brighter futures.
The club’s origins trace back to the devastating floods that struck Kashmir in September 2014. In the aftermath, journalist Shamim Meraj and businessman Sandeep Chattoo noticed boys playing with improvised footballs in flood‑affected areas. They distributed 100 footballs to local youngsters, sparking an initiative that eventually evolved into the first professional club from the region. The club, officially formed in Srinagar in 2016 and nicknamed the “Sheeni Seh” or Snow Leopards, made history by remaining unbeaten in the 2017–18 I-League 2nd Division and earning promotion to India’s top‑tier league.
Beyond its league success, Real Kashmir FC has clinched the IFA Shield twice, in 2020 and 2022, and invested heavily in youth development. Its Under‑13, Under‑15, and Under‑17 squads have nurtured talent that has progressed to the Indian Super League and even the national team.
