Jason Sanjay steers clear of political chatter; debut heist film Sigma hits screens

Jason Sanjay, the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and film icon C. Joseph Vijay, is set to make his directorial debut with the heist thriller Sigma, which will reach theatres on 2 October. The film, produced by Lyca Productions and starring Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah, had originally been slated for a July release but was delayed while Vijay’s political film Jana Nayagan secured CBFC certification.

During a recent interview on Galatta Plus, Jason spoke candidly about the scrutiny that comes with his family name. He said, “I just try to stay away from it as much as I can. Because there’s always gonna be an outside narrative.” He added that his father’s position as chief minister imposes “certain limitations” on his personal and professional conduct, and that he feels the need to “safeguard the reputation of the family.” He acknowledged the pressure, noting that it can feel heavy “sometimes,” but he remains focused on his own vision for the film.

When asked whether he worries about public perception, Jason admitted, “I think about it all the time, I can’t deny that.” He explained that while his lineage will always be part of his identity, he hopes that once the movie begins, audiences will judge it on its own merits. He said, “But five minutes in, people are gonna watch it as just a film.” He also expressed a desire for the film’s reception—whether praise or criticism—to reflect who he is as a filmmaker, rather than merely his connection to Vijay.

Jason emphasized the importance of building his own identity after Sigma releases. He believes that, despite the legacy and the political climate, his work will stand on its own. The heist narrative of Sigma will test his storytelling chops and offer a fresh entry point into Kollywood for the next generation of filmmakers.
