VibeShort tops India’s free entertainment apps; eclipsing Netflix and Prime Video

In a surprising turn of events, India’s burgeoning micro‑drama sector has pushed a new entrant to the top of the country’s free entertainment app rankings, outpacing even the streaming behemoths Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. According to AppBrain’s September 30 list of the top free entertainment apps in India, VibeShort: AI Short Dramas claimed the No. 1 spot, with Netflix and Prime Video following at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. The chart also placed MX Player at No. 4 and BookMyShow at No. 5, but the real shock came from the concentration of micro‑drama and short‑fiction platforms in the upper half of the list.

VibeShort sits at the summit, but six of the top twelve free entertainment apps on the chart are built around short‑drama, drama‑shorts or AI‑driven storytelling. StoryReel: Drama Shorts & TV occupies No. 6, NetShort – Popular Dramas & TV is No. 7, DramaBox – Stream Drama Shorts lands at No. 9, FlickReels – AI Story & Drama at No. 10, and MVShort at No. 11. In other words, half of the top twelve positions belong to the micro‑drama ecosystem, a clear sign that these niche formats are gaining traction alongside the established OTT giants.

While the ranking reflects download momentum and app‑store performance at a single point in time, it does not indicate that VibeShort has surpassed Netflix or Prime Video in subscriber numbers, active users, viewing hours or revenue. Nevertheless, the sheer presence of multiple short‑drama apps near the top makes the trend difficult to ignore, as they now compete for the same valuable smartphone attention that has traditionally been dominated by long‑standing brands such as ZEE5, MX Player and BookMyShow.

Supporting the headline, The Ormax OTT Audience Report 2026 reports that micro‑dramas are the fastest‑growing content format in India, with audience numbers rising by 50% over 2025—just ahead of K‑Dramas, which grew 48%, and anime, which expanded 32%. Ormax also estimates that India now has 664.9 million OTT viewers, an 11% increase from 601.2 million in 2025, defining an OTT viewer as someone who has watched online video at least once in the previous month.

For micro‑drama companies, the next challenge will be to translate this rapid audience growth into sustainable revenue streams and to maintain their foothold against the entrenched streaming giants that continue to dominate the market.
