Rajkummar Rao’s Shahid lands on Prime Video after 13‑year wait; writer asks why now

After a 13‑year wait, the critically acclaimed biopic Shahid is now available to stream on Prime Video. The film, directed by Hansal Mehta and starring Rajkummar Rao as the eponymous lawyer, finally reaches a wider audience following a period of limited digital availability.

Released in 2013, Shahid tells the true story of Shahid Azmi, a human rights lawyer who defended people accused under anti‑terror laws and fought for due process in a climate where Muslims were often presumed guilty. Azmi was tragically murdered in Mumbai in 2010. The film earned major accolades at the 61st National Film Awards, with Mehta taking Best Director and Rao sharing Best Actor with Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu.

Writer‑editor Apurva Asrani took to X to comment on the film’s delayed arrival on a streaming platform. He tweeted, “The National Award‑winning #Shahid is finally streaming on Prime Video. It took 13 years for our film to find a streaming home.” Asrani added that the movie’s story—about a lawyer who stood up against a climate of suspicion and injustice—had not been widely accessible for years.

In his post, Asrani reflected on the political climate that followed the film’s theatrical release. He noted that the period after 2014 saw dissenters, activists, journalists and defenders of the accused increasingly under scrutiny, with cases such as that of Umar Khalid lasting years in prison. He suggested that these conditions may have contributed to Shahid remaining off major streaming services.

Asrani also highlighted the challenges faced by filmmakers who tackle contentious subjects. He argued that many projects either struggle to get made or are co‑opted into producing “kosher” stories that win National Awards for political conformity rather than artistic merit. He questioned why a film that had received such critical and institutional recognition had waited so long to find a digital home.

With Shahid now streaming in 2026, Asrani asks, “So why now?” He wonders what has changed since the film’s theatrical debut that finally allows its powerful narrative to reach a broader audience. The release marks a significant moment for Indian cinema, offering viewers access to a film that once faced a prolonged absence from mainstream digital platforms.
