Ramayana to Debut Pre‑Diwali on November 5; Worldwide Release Planned

Bollywood’s highly anticipated epic Ramayana is set to hit theatres worldwide on Thursday, November 5, a move that could break long‑standing release traditions around Diwali. The film, a two‑part saga directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, will star Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. Music is a joint effort by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer.

The decision to release on November 5 follows a series of date changes. On August 5, Bollywood Hungama first reported a November 6 release, while Malhotra later confirmed that the film would open overseas on November 6 and in India on November 8. However, a new source revealed that the makers now plan a simultaneous worldwide launch on November 5, pending final approval.

Releasing a film three days before Diwali is unprecedented. Industry insiders note that since 2014, major Diwali releases have typically debuted the day after the festival, as audiences are busy with puja and celebrations. Ramayana’s makers are betting on the film’s appeal to draw crowds even before the holiday, potentially boosting collections on the big holiday that follows on November 9.

Dharma Productions will handle domestic distribution, while Sony Pictures has secured overseas rights. The film’s release strategy aims to maximize box‑office potential across both markets, with expectations that the extended first‑week run could reach historic levels.

Ramayana’s first part is slated for Diwali 2026, with the second installment scheduled for release on the big screen on Diwali 2027. Fans of the franchise and the cast can look forward to a cinematic experience that blends mythological storytelling with modern filmmaking techniques.
