Veteran actor Nana Patekar cremated with full state honours; son performs final rites

Veteran actor Nana Patekar, who died at 75 on the morning of Thursday, October 8, 2026, was cremated at his farmhouse in Pune, Maharashtra. The cremation took place on the family estate known as Donje, a location the actor had requested for his final rites. The ceremony was attended by his son, Malhar Patekar, who lit the pyre and performed the last rites in the presence of close relatives, friends and fellow film industry colleagues.

Patekar’s death followed a sudden cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa. He was found unresponsive early that morning and rushed to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation for roughly 45 minutes before he was pronounced dead at about 5:20 a.m. IST. Malhar Patekar later confirmed the news to the public.

The state of Maharashtra honored the actor with a full state funeral, a decision announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The officials paid their respects at Pune airport before the cremation, underscoring Patekar’s impact on Indian cinema and his social work. The ceremony also highlighted his contributions through the Naam Foundation, which he co‑founded with actor Makarand Anaspure to aid drought‑affected farmers and rural communities.

Prominent figures from the entertainment world gathered to pay tribute, including actors Jackie Shroff, producer Sajid Nadiadwala, and filmmaker Anil Sharma. Their presence reflected the wide respect Patekar commanded across Hindi and Marathi film circles, where he earned a Padma Shri for his distinguished career. Colleagues and admirers expressed their sorrow, recalling his powerful screen presence and memorable performances.

As the industry mourns, Patekar’s legacy continues to resonate. His work spanned multiple genres and languages, and his life’s work extended beyond the silver screen, leaving a lasting imprint on both cinema and society.
