Veteran actor Nana Patekar dies; Goa police open unnatural‑death inquiry

Veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar, 75, was cremated with full state honours at his Donje farmhouse in Pune on Thursday night, October 8, after his death earlier that day. The ceremony was attended by family, friends and a small delegation of government officials who paid tribute to the actor’s legacy.

In the meantime, authorities in Goa have opened an inquiry into the circumstances of his death. Panaji Police have registered an “unnatural death” case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and are conducting a further investigation led by PSI Nitin Naik.

Police records show that Patekar was found dead at his Ocean Park residence in Dona Paula and was transported to the casualty ward of Manipal Hospital in Bambolim. The registration of an unnatural‑death case is a procedural step that does not imply any wrongdoing; it simply allows the police to examine the details surrounding the death.

Following the cremation, Patekar’s son, Malhar Patekar, spoke to the media, reflecting on his father’s impact. He said, “A person like Nana Saheb never truly leaves us; his achievements have made him immortal. He always believed that everyone should come together and follow a righteous path on a global scale. Carrying forward the vision Nana Saheb left behind is how we will shape the life ahead.”

Patekar was also known for his social work, notably through the Naam Foundation, which has helped drought‑affected farmers and rural communities in Maharashtra. The investigation into his death is ongoing, and further details are expected as the enquiry progresses.
