The blockbuster hit Saiyaara (2025) has catapulted Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda into the spotlight, earning the film more than Rs. 575 crore worldwide and marking director Mohit Suri as a surprise success in recent Bollywood history. The romantic drama’s triumph has turned the young pair into the most talked‑about newcomers in the industry, but it also raises the question of whether Aneet Padda has been crowned a superstar too early.
While Padda’s performance was praised and her on‑screen chemistry with Panday became a talking point, the film’s success cannot be attributed to her alone. Saiyaara benefited from Suri’s direction, chart‑buster music, an emotional storyline, aggressive marketing and, crucially, the dynamic pairing of its leads. Without these elements, it is unclear whether the film would have achieved its record‑breaking numbers, or whether audiences would have flocked to theatres if Padda had starred without Panday.
Now, Padda is looking to prove her individual box‑office pull by heading the horror‑comedy Shakti Shalini, a project that is part of Maddock Films’ popular cinematic universe. In a recent interview, she said she had always wanted a solo outing after Saiyaara and was delighted to get the opportunity to headline Shakti Shalini. Her confidence is understandable, but the move also brings significant pressure, as the film’s success will be judged more on her solo appeal than on a romantic pairing.
Unlike Saiyaara, Shakti Shalini places Padda in a more prominent role, but the film’s association with an established universe means that even a strong opening may not conclusively prove her individual box‑office draw. Bollywood must therefore distinguish between overnight popularity and genuine superstardom, a distinction that has tripped up many newcomers who have had a sensational debut but struggled to sustain audience interest over time.
For Padda, Shakti Shalini is a chance to move beyond the romantic image that made her famous and to demonstrate whether audiences are invested in her as a performer or simply in the magic of Saiyaara. The film’s performance will be a critical barometer of her ability to attract viewers across different genres and maintain a loyal fan base, thereby cementing her status as a true superstar in the Hindi film industry.
