Joju George's Varavu Sets New Record in Kerala Box Office

Joju George’s latest Malayalam action thriller, Varavu, has set a new benchmark for the actor’s opening-day earnings in Kerala. The film, directed by veteran filmmaker Shaji Kailas, opened in theatres on Thursday, 16 July and raked in ₹1.55 crore on its first day, according to industry tracker AB George. This figure eclipses the actor’s previous bests, with Antony and Pani collecting ₹1.25 crore and ₹1.15 crore respectively on their first days.

AB George’s report, shared on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed that the strong start positions Varavu as Joju George’s highest‑grossing opening day in the state to date. The film’s success is expected to be bolstered by Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday collections, which will reveal whether the initial momentum translates into a solid opening weekend.

Set in a hillside town where power dynamics shape everyday life, Varavu follows a man’s return after a life‑changing incident that tore a family apart. His quest for justice brings buried secrets to light, sparking a confrontation that could change the town’s future. The cast features Joju George alongside Arjun Ashokan, Murali Gopy, Baiju Santhosh, Baburaj, Vani Vishwanath, and Abhimanyu Shammi Thilakan.

The screenplay was penned by A. K. Sajan, while production was handled by Naisy Reji under the Olga Productions banner. Cinematography by S. Saravanan, editing by Shameer Muhammed, and music composition by Sam CS (who also scored the background music) round out the technical team. Action sequences were choreographed by Stunt Silva, Kalai Kingson, Phoenix Prabu, Rajashekar Master, Thavasi Raj, Mafia Sasi, and Jackie Johnson.

With its record‑setting first‑day haul, Varavu has drawn attention to how the film will perform over the coming days. Industry observers will watch closely to see if the strong start is sustained throughout the theatrical run.
