Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government is in talks with filmmaker Aditya Dhar to helm a high‑budget biopic about the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan. The revelation came during a Facebook Live session on Thursday, July 16, when Sarma outlined the project’s ambition to showcase Assam’s history to a national and international audience through a Bollywood‑scale production.
According to Sarma, discussions are already underway with Dhar, who is best known for directing the National Award‑winning “Uri: The Surgical Strike” and the forthcoming “Dhurandhar.” The chief minister said he will meet the director in August to go over the film’s details, but added that the project is not tied to a single filmmaker. “If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors,” he said, stressing the goal of creating a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan.
Should the collaboration materialise, it would be the first time the Assam government backs a Bollywood‑style feature film centred on the life of Lachit Borphukan. Sarma explained that the vision is to introduce audiences across India and abroad to the military achievements of the Ahom commander, thereby celebrating an important chapter of Indian history.
Lachit Borphukan, revered as one of Assam’s greatest military leaders, is best remembered for leading the Ahom army to victory against Mughal forces in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. His leadership, courage, and strategic brilliance have made him a symbol of patriotism and resilience in the state. Through the proposed film, the government hopes to bring his story to a wider audience while honouring Assam’s rich heritage.
