The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has issued a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, expressing its support for singer Daler Mehndi after a public incident in New Tehri. The controversy erupted when Uttarakhand Cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted Mehndi’s set at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair on Sunday, accusing the performer of being under the influence of alcohol.
FWICE’s correspondence highlighted the singer’s recent health challenges, noting that he has undergone surgery and is in recovery. The federation also clarified that, to its knowledge, Mehndi does not consume alcohol and urged authorities to handle any concerns about an artist’s condition with sensitivity and discretion rather than public reprimand.
In its appeal, FWICE stressed the importance of treating artists fairly and professionally, regardless of their status or the circumstances of a performance. It called for a more compassionate approach to addressing health or wellbeing issues, warning against hasty conclusions that could lead to public humiliation.
The federation also praised Mehndi’s contributions to Indian music, describing him as a celebrated figure whose work has resonated across generations. FWICE expressed that the incident had caused distress within the entertainment community and urged event organisers and public officials to ensure respectful handling of performers.
