National Award‑winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar has announced his next feature, a biopic on Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, after completing his upcoming film The Wives of Bollywood. The project, titled Syama – The Missing Chapter (working title), will be directed by Bhandarkar and produced by Aditya Kumar Halwasiya under Bhandarkar Entertainment and AKH Ventures.
Dr. Mukherjee, a scholar and statesman, was the youngest Vice‑Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and served in Jawaharlal Nehru’s first cabinet. The film will chart his political journey, ideological convictions, and his resignation from the cabinet over disagreements with the government. It will also cover his role in founding the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, his 1953 campaign against the permit system in Jammu and Kashmir, and the circumstances of his death while in detention.
Blending historical drama with political thriller elements, Syama – The Missing Chapter aims to examine the decisions that shaped Mukherjee’s public life and to introduce his ideas to a new generation. Producer Aditya Kumar Halwasiya said, “Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s life is a powerful reminder that true leadership lies in courage, conviction and service to the nation. Through Syama, we aim to bring his remarkable journey to the screen and inspire a new generation to discover our history, embrace our heritage and understand the values that help shape our nation’s future.”
Bhandarkar added, “Exploring Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s life for the first time as a filmmaker is both a challenge and demanding. Through Syama, I hope to bring an important chapter of India’s history to the screen with honesty, sensitivity and a fresh perspective.” The film is set to start production next year, with details on the cast and other aspects still undisclosed.
