The Bombay High Court has issued a show‑cause notice to the Cine and Television Artistes Association (CINTAA) after the body went ahead with elections on 20 October 2026 and announced the results, in direct violation of earlier court directions. The notice, issued by Justice Aarti Sathe on 22 October, alleges that CINTAA’s actions constitute wilful disobedience and breach of an undertaking given before the court.
FWICE, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees, filed a contempt petition accusing CINTAA of ignoring the High Court’s orders dated 11 September and 19 October, which required all parties involved in the dispute to refrain from taking any steps that could affect the court’s directives while a Notice of Motion remained pending. Despite these restrictions, CINTAA proceeded with its election process and declared the winners, prompting FWICE to seek judicial intervention.
The show‑cause notice, issued under Rule 9(1) of the Contempt of Courts (Bombay High Court Rules, 1994), asks CINTAA to explain why it should not be subjected to proceedings under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971. The court has also barred the association from implementing the October 20 election results until the restraint is lifted.
FWICE’s petition was presented by advocates Saveena Bedi Sachar and Ashok Shetty. The High Court has not yet decided on the contempt petition, but the matter is scheduled to return to the bench on 18 November 2026. The notice gives CINTAA an opportunity to respond to the allegations before any final action is taken.
