Shanaya Kapoor Doubles Up in Murder‑Mystery Thriller; JioHotstar Unveils Trailer

JioHotstar has dropped the first look of the new series Student of the Year: After Dark, a murder‑mystery that turns the light‑hearted campus drama into a darker, more suspenseful tale. The teaser reveals the story’s central twist: Shanaya Kapoor will play a twin pair, with one sister dead and the other on a quest for answers.

Kapoor’s dual role sees her as Aayesha Malik, a popular student whose body is discovered at St. Teresa’s, and her identical twin, Aditi, who refuses to accept the death as accidental. Aditi’s determination drives her to enroll in the school and join the Student of the Year contest, turning the competition into a maze of suspects as she interrogates classmates, rivals, and friends who could be hiding secrets.

Speaking about the challenge, Kapoor noted that the two characters “give me an opportunity to explore contrasting personalities and choices.” She added that while the sisters look alike, they differ sharply in temperament and decisions, with Aayesha’s death sparking a narrative where appearances deceive and even close relationships can conceal hidden motives.

Director Reema Maya described the series as a “story about the pressures of competition and the consequences of an all‑consuming desire to succeed.” She emphasized that the show tackles the intense drive to win, which can erode friendships and personal integrity, and that the murder mystery adds a layer where the contest itself becomes part of the investigation.

Maya highlighted that the franchise has been reimagined for contemporary audiences, blending grit, angst, and heart. She teased that the trailer offers a glimpse into the new world she’s built, hinting at more twists and revelations to come. The series marks Kapoor’s OTT debut and her first time tackling a double role, promising a fresh take on a beloved franchise.
