In a decisive ruling, the Bombay High Court annulled an award issued on 3 July 2026 by the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) against Nikhil Dwivedi’s production house, Saffron Magicworks. The court’s order, issued on 23 October 2026, declared the suit disposed of and left no further applications for consideration, effectively ending the legal battle.
The decision followed an interim order dated 9 September 2026 from Justice Arif S. Doctor, which had restrained IMPPA from labeling Saffron Magicworks a defaulter on the basis of the disputed award. That earlier order also recorded that the defendant, instructed by counsel, would not act on the award. Saffron Magicworks had challenged the award through the High Court, seeking protection against its enforcement and any resulting consequences.
In its latest judgment, Justice Doctor noted that because the award was issued by IMPPA’s own Dispute Resolution Committee, the association could not claim injury from its setting aside. He also observed that IMPPA, though served, had never entered an appearance during the proceedings. The court’s remarks addressed the dispute over the interpretation of the September order, particularly the production house’s claim that IMPPA’s public statements about the court’s directions were misleading.
With the award nullified, the court closed the case and the pending applications, leaving the parties’ legal rights and potential remedies intact. Saffron Magicworks was represented by counsel Rashmin Khandekar, Dhruva Gandhi, Madhu Gadodia, Vivek Dwivedi, Vinita Dandekar and Aryan Garg of Anand and Naik. The ruling marks a significant victory for the producer and a clear statement on the limits of IMPPA’s dispute‑resolution powers.
