Rumours are swirling that Salman Khan could be the next star to step onto the set of Khalnayak Returns, the long‑awaited sequel to Subhash Ghai’s 1993 cult classic. According to a report by Mid‑Day, Ghai and his writing team are currently drafting a police officer’s role that they believe would suit Khan’s screen persona. The film, still in the scripting stage, has yet to confirm any cast members, and Khan’s involvement remains unverified.
The original Khalnayak launched Sanjay Dutt as the anti‑hero Ballu, with Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit in supporting roles. The 1993 hit has become a staple of Bollywood nostalgia, and the sequel promises to bring Dutt back to the story. Sources say that the new script will feature a cop who acts as a “good Samaritan” and supports Dutt’s character, a dynamic that could see Khan and Dutt sharing the screen once again.
An insider told Mid‑Day that the role “impacts the narrative” and that “who better than Salman to play this helpful character?” However, the insider added that the casting is not yet locked in, as the screenplay is still under development. The makers are expected to make a final decision only after the script is complete.
When questioned about the possibility of Khan’s involvement, Ghai was cautious. He told Mid‑Day that it was too early to comment, saying, “It’s too early to say anything. The scripting is still on, and once we have a complete script, we will know where we stand.” If Khan does join the project, it would mark his second collaboration with Ghai, following the 2008 film Yuvvraaj.
Meanwhile, fans of the original film have expressed excitement at the prospect of seeing Dutt and Khan together again. The sequel’s development has already sparked discussions on social media, with many hoping that the new film will capture the same blend of drama and action that made the first installment a hit.
