Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey; Earns ₹17.40 Crore on Opening Day in India

Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, The Odyssey, opened in India on July 17 to a robust response, pulling in an estimated ₹17.40 crore net on its first day across 8,413 screens. The figure places the film among the biggest Hollywood debuts in the country, though it remains slightly behind Avatar: Fire and Ash and Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned around ₹18 crore and ₹21 crore respectively on their opening days.

The blockbuster, featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, also stars Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, John Leguizamo and Mia Goth. Nolan’s first post‑Oppenheimer venture is an action‑fantasy retelling of Homer’s classic, following Odysseus’s perilous ten‑year journey home after the Trojan War.

Language‑specific earnings show the original English version leading the pack with approximately ₹13.75 crore net, while the Hindi dub added around ₹1.90 crore, the Telugu version earned roughly ₹1.10 crore, and the Tamil version contributed about ₹65 lakh. The film’s occupancy averaged 48.7% across theatres on day one.

With a total domestic gross of ₹20.76 crore and a net collection of ₹17.40 crore to date, The Odyssey has secured a strong position in the Indian market. The movie was cleared by the censor board without cuts and received an ‘A’ rating. Nolan, alongside Tom Holland, producer Emma Thomas and Matt Damon, attended the grand premiere in India, marking a high‑profile launch for the film.
