In a move that has stirred the Bollywood distribution arena, Jio Studios has aligned with superstar Salman Khan to release his upcoming film Maatrubhumi on December 4, directly competing with Dinesh Vijan’s production Eetha starring Shraddha Kapoor. The decision follows Jio Studios’ recent exit as the distributor of Eetha, a role that was taken over by PVR Pictures after a brief period of uncertainty.
According to a source close to the negotiations, Jio Studios and Khan’s team saw December 4 as an optimal window, citing the strong performance of recent releases such as Pushpa 2, Animal, and Dhurandhar. The date would also give Maatrubhumi a two‑week clean run before the arrival of the global blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, providing a strategic advantage in the crowded holiday season.
While Eetha is now under PVR Pictures’ distribution, it retains its original cast, including Laxman Uttekar’s return to the big screen after his role in Chhavva. In contrast, Maatrubhumi is directed by Apoorva Lakhia, known for his work on Shootout at Lokhandwala, and is expected to draw Khan’s massive fan base.
Both parties have emphasized that the clash will remain cordial. A trade insider told Bollywood Hungama that “the clash will be civil and respectful,” echoing a sentiment that has often characterized Salman Khan’s releases. The move is seen as a test of Jio Studios’ confidence in competing head‑to‑head with a PVR Pictures‑distributed film.
With the release date set, industry observers are watching closely to see how the dual launches perform against each other and against the backdrop of international releases, as the Indian box‑office calendar becomes increasingly congested this holiday season.
