Dhanush has added another feather to his cap after his second directorial effort, Raayan, was crowned Best Tamil Film at the 72nd National Film Awards. The 2024 neo‑noir action thriller, which also stars the actor, marked his 50th appearance as a lead and his second time behind the camera. The accolade, coupled with a Special Mention for his performance in Captain Miller, made the ceremony a landmark day for the Chennai‑born star.
On the night the winners were announced, Dhanush posted an emotional message on social media. He thanked the jury and the selection committee for recognising both Raayan and Captain Miller, and expressed gratitude to his team, the media and the fans who had supported him over the years. “I am truly humbled and overwhelmed,” he wrote, adding that the Special Mention for Captain Miller was especially close to his heart because he considers it one of the finest performances of his career.
Raayan’s triumph was a deeply personal moment for the actor. The film follows Kathavaraayan, a fast‑food truck owner in North Chennai who, after being forced to flee his village with his siblings, becomes embroiled in a tale of family, sacrifice and revenge. Dhanush said that the National Award felt “extra personal” because it was his first ever recognition as a director, and he described it as a blessing he would cherish for life.
He wrapped his heartfelt note with his trademark words, “Ennam Pol Vaazhkkai” (Life is shaped by your thoughts) and “Har Har Mahadev.” The 72nd National Film Awards also saw other stars such as Kartik Aaryan, Yami Gautam and Mammootty take home top honours, but for Dhanush the double recognition of Best Tamil Film and a Special Mention made the evening unforgettable.
