Kartik Aaryan Wins National Award; Dedication to Character Praised

When Kabir Khan’s film Chandu Champion celebrated its second anniversary last month, former Paralympic gold medallist Murlikant Petkar—whose real‑life journey inspired the story—predicted that the film’s lead, Kartik Aaryan, would soon receive a National Award. The prediction came true on Saturday when the 72nd National Film Awards announced Kartik Aaryan as the winner of the Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Petkar’s life.

Petkar expressed immense pride at the announcement, saying, “What a moment of pride and joy! This recognition is a fitting reward for his remarkable performance and unwavering dedication. This film has given me memories that I will cherish forever.” He added that the movie had already changed his life, bringing his story to a new generation and earning him the Arjuna Award in 2024. With Kartik’s National Award, Petkar felt that his journey had come full circle.

Speaking about the impact of the film, Petkar emphasized that Chandu Champion is “not just a movie; it is a celebration of grit and excellence.” He noted that the award “makes the moment even more special for everyone involved.” Petkar also highlighted the message the film conveyed, stating that the recognition confirms the story’s reach to audiences.

When asked about Kartik’s approach to the role, Petkar recalled their first meeting: “When we first met, he approached my story with a lot of sincerity and curiosity—he genuinely wanted to understand not just the events of my life, but also the emotions and mindset behind them.” He praised the actor’s dedication, noting that Kartik “truly immersed himself in the character and treated my story with great respect.” Petkar concluded that Kartik’s hard work and dedication earned him the National Award.
