Sidhant Gupta's Duet marks Spotify's first short film release; backed by Bejoy Nambiar

Spotify has announced its first short‑film release, a new venture that could reshape the way Indian short cinema reaches audiences. The platform will debut the 16‑minute drama Duet on July 30, bringing the film to listeners worldwide. The story, directed by Sheetal Menon and produced under the Getaway Pictures banner, follows a pianist who is forced to confront the sudden death of his estranged brother while isolated by a global pandemic. The narrative is framed as a haunting duet, with music acting as both a catalyst and a conduit for hope.

Starring Sidhant Gupta in the lead role, Duet also features special appearances by Sayani Gupta and Puja Sarup. The screenplay was co‑written by Arpita Chatterjee and Menon, who also conceived the story. Cinematography was handled by Siddharth Srinivasan, while Prakash Kurup provided the editing and Moinak Bose crafted an immersive soundscape that underpins the film’s emotional core. The score was composed by Sid Acharya.

Backing the project is acclaimed filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar, whose support has helped elevate the short’s profile. Menon, reflecting on the film’s creation, said the project “grew out of a very specific kind of grief… the isolation so many of us felt during the pandemic.” She added that the journey of completing the film was fraught with doubt, but the story’s persistence kept her moving forward. “Today more than anything, this film’s release is a reminder to never give up on a story you truly believe in,” she noted.

Gupta, who describes the film as “a journey from the darkest moment to the kiss of light,” explained that the character’s internal struggle mirrors his own post‑Jubilee experiences. He said, “I have always wondered what a person must be going through internally when giving up on life seems easier than living another day. What is that level of pain that’s beyond any help in someone’s head?” The film will also be available on Getaway Pictures’ YouTube channel, ensuring accessibility beyond Spotify’s streaming service.

With Spotify’s entry into short‑film distribution, Duet sets a precedent for future collaborations between streaming platforms and Indian filmmakers. The release underscores the growing importance of digital avenues for short‑form storytelling, offering creators new channels to share their work with a global audience.
