Operation Safed Sagar; Netflix Series Inspired by Indian Air Force's Kargil War Mission

Netflix has rolled out the first look at its upcoming military drama, Operation Safed Sagar, a series that will bring to the screen one of the most pivotal yet under‑reported episodes of the 1999 Kargil conflict. The story follows the Indian Air Force’s daring high‑altitude campaign that proved decisive for the Indian Army as Pakistani troops seized key positions in the rugged Himalayas.

At the center of the narrative are the young pilots of the Golden Arrows Squadron, led by Wing Commander B.S. Dhanoa, nicknamed “Tony” and played by Jimmy Shergill. Siddharth portrays Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, while other cast members bring to life the squadron’s crew and the families who endure the strain of war from home. The series promises to showcase the perilous missions flown at extreme elevations and the emotional toll on those left behind.

In a statement, Monika Shergill, Vice‑President Content for Netflix India, said the project is “a privilege to tell” and the most ambitious production the streaming giant has undertaken in the country. She praised the cooperation of the Indian Air Force, the talent of the cast and crew, and the fresh creators Abhijit Parmar and Kushal Srivastava, who helped shape the project from the ground up. The series also credits Matchbox Shots for helping deliver “riveting stories with unforgettable characters.”

To capture authenticity, the production team consulted with veterans of the Indian Air Force and families who participated in the operation. Filming took place across operational IAF bases, using real aircraft and military infrastructure to recreate the scale and intensity of the high‑altitude missions. Director Oni Sen noted that the series would not only highlight the operational scale but also the courage, sacrifice and spirit at its core.

Netflix’s trailer showcases the dramatic aerial sequences and the tense atmosphere of the Kargil War, hinting at a story that balances action with the personal sacrifices of those on the front lines. Fans of military dramas can look forward to a series that combines historical accuracy with compelling storytelling, bringing a critical chapter of India’s defense history to a global audience.
