Disney has unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming MCU film Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony. The new teaser, released online, promises a star‑studded lineup and introduces a major twist: Robert Downey Jr. will take on the mantle of Doctor Doom, one of the most iconic villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer hints at a sprawling ensemble, but does not confirm the presence of Tom Holland’s Spider‑Man.
While the Russo Brothers’ film is slated for a December 18 theatrical release, Spider‑Man’s next outing is set for July 31. Holland will return as the web‑slinger in Spider‑Man: Brand New Day, the fourth entry in Sony/Marvel Studios’ Spidey franchise. The new movie is expected to adopt a more mature, street‑level tone, positioning it chronologically before the events of Avengers: Doomsday. Production schedules suggest that the overlap between the two projects made it logistically challenging for Holland to play a significant role in both films.
In addition to Downey’s Doom, the trailer confirms that Lewis Pullman will portray Robert Reynolds, better known as the Sentry. Pullman’s inclusion was announced during Marvel’s livestream event that revealed the full cast. The film’s ensemble also features returning heroes such as Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Shang‑Chi (Simu Liu), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), the Thunderbolts, Namor, the Black Panthers, Gambit (Channing Tatum), the Fantastic Four, and Magneto (Ian McKellen), among others.
The Russo Brothers helm Avengers: Doomsday with a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, marking their first MCU feature since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. That film remains the second‑highest‑grossing movie of all time, and the four Avengers titles to date have collectively earned more than $7.7 billion worldwide. With a diverse roster and a high‑profile villain, Avengers: Doomsday is poised to be a major event for the summer and the holiday season alike.
