Anurag Kashyap Slams Delhi Police Action; Condemns Police Brutality

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap took to Instagram on Monday to criticize the Delhi Police’s handling of the protests that erupted over alleged irregularities in the NEET‑UG 2026 examination and the release of leaked exam papers. The protests, organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), had turned violent as demonstrators marched toward Parliament, prompting police to deploy lathi charges and tear‑gas. According to Delhi Police, more than 118 officers were injured in the clash, while many protestors also sustained injuries.

In a short Hindi post, Kashyap wrote, “I didn’t know you have to sell your soul and conscience to wear a police uniform. Is there one police personnel in this country who can stand up and say I won’t follow this order because it is wrong.” While he did not name the CJP or the protest directly, the comment was widely interpreted as a rebuke of the police’s use of force against the demonstrators.

The CJP’s march had been driven by demands that included the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and a ₹1 crore compensation for families of NEET aspirants who had allegedly lost their lives. The party’s spokesperson, Saurav Das, met Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda to present these demands, and the protest was set to continue until Pradhan’s resignation.

Delhi officials maintained that the protesters had behaved aggressively and had refused to disperse despite repeated warnings. They claimed that the police had acted within the bounds of the law to restore order. In contrast, civil society groups and some protestors accused the police of indiscriminate targeting, leading to the injuries reported on both sides.

The incident has reignited debate over police conduct during public demonstrations in India. Kashyap’s remarks added a high‑profile voice to calls for accountability, while authorities defended their actions as necessary to quell the violence that broke out during the CJP’s protest.
