Tom Holland’s new Spider‑Man film, Spider‑Man: Brand New Day, hits theaters on July 31 and marks a shift in tone for the character. The movie, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is described by Holland as “grittier, more emotional, and grounded,” yet it still retains the humor that fans love. It is set a few years after the events of No Way Home, and follows a Peter Parker who is grappling with isolation after Doctor Strange’s spell erased everyone’s memories of him and his alter‑ego.
In the story, the spell has taken its toll on key people in Peter’s life. Michelle “MJ” Jones‑Watson, played by Holland’s real‑life wife Zendaya, and his best friend Ned, portrayed by Jacob Batalon, both forget the time they spent with Peter. The film explores the idea that the bravest thing one can do is ask for help, a theme Holland says is a “cautionary tale about living a life alone.”
To navigate his new reality, Peter teams up with a familiar face from the Marvel universe: the Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal. Bernthal’s character, a vigilante from the Netflix series The Punisher, becomes an unlikely ally. The two form a bond after a rocky start, with Bernthal noting that the dynamic of “two people trying to push everything away” is the opposite of what it means to be human.
Other Marvel characters make cameo appearances in the film, including Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, and Bruce Banner/The Hulk, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo. The film also features a mystery character played by Stranger Things star Sadie Sink. Sink revealed that keeping her role a secret was easy until she had to start promoting the movie, saying, “Now that I have to talk about it all day, it is a little bit more difficult than I thought.”
Cretton, who previously directed Shang‑Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and executive produced Marvel’s Wonder Man, urges audiences not to overanalyze the plot so that the surprises can land fresh in theaters. He believes that figuring out the puzzle beforehand is fun and creates anticipation, but ultimately he hopes viewers will still be surprised by the unexpected moments in the film.
