After a decade of fan speculation and actor complaints, the iconic poster for the 2016 musical romance La La Land has received a long‑awaited tweak. Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, released a new version of the image on its Instagram account, featuring Ryan Gosling’s hand in a more natural, flat position that he had insisted on during the original shoot.
Gosling first voiced his frustration in a 2024 interview with The Wall Street Journal, describing the moment in the film where he and Emma Stone were supposed to raise their hands during a dance sequence. He recalled, “We were supposed to have our hands up, and I thought it would be cool to put my hand more flat even though everyone told me it wasn’t cool. I was sure it was cooler.” He went on to say that seeing the original poster repeatedly had “killed the energy,” and he dubbed the pose the “La La Hand.”
In a brief post on its Instagram, Lionsgate acknowledged the change with a single line: “A minor adjustment.” The updated poster will accompany the film’s 10th‑anniversary re‑release, which begins in theaters on Sunday, August 16. The movie will be shown in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres, giving audiences a fresh visual experience for the first time since its 2016 debut.
La La Land, which earned six Academy Awards—including Best Director for Damien Chazelle and Best Cinematography for Linus Sandgren—also captured a record‑breaking seven Golden Globes. The film grossed $447 million worldwide against a $30 million production budget. In addition to its cinematic success, a Broadway adaptation is currently in development, though a premiere date has not yet been announced.
Gosling’s performance as Sebastian, an aspiring pianist, earned him a Golden Globe, while Stone’s portrayal of Mia earned her the Best Actress Oscar. Their on‑screen chemistry remains a key reason the film continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
