During the pre‑shooting phase of the 2007 romantic comedy Partner, veteran actor Govinda recalled a candid conversation with Salman Khan that he says helped the superstar navigate a difficult period in his life. Govinda, who had just returned from a stint in politics and was weighing around 114 kg, met Salman to offer a dose of motivation and practical advice. He encouraged the then‑struggling actor to look inward and to focus on his physical fitness, reminding him that a hero’s aura began with a healthy body and a positive mindset.
Govinda told ANI that Salman had been “dealing with pain and distress” and had become withdrawn. The actor suggested that Salman spend time with a friend named Satya, and while they shared a drink, Govinda urged him to “look within yourself.” He added, “You are the hero, but you don’t look like one right now. You look unhappy, you look sad. Come out of this.” Govinda’s own weight loss journey, he noted, would soon make him a character actor, but he believed Salman could still command the screen.
In a further push, Govinda advised Salman to exercise for two to three hours a day, comparing him to Dharmendra, a legendary hero blessed with good looks and a charismatic personality. “You are the only guy who could carry that kind of aura, the kind that makes people look at you and say, ‘That’s a hero,’” Govinda said. The advice was taken seriously, and Salman’s subsequent fitness regime helped him regain confidence and physical presence.
Govinda also recalled telling Salman that he would “rule the industry for a decade.” The prediction proved accurate, as Salman went on to dominate Bollywood’s box‑office landscape for ten years, starring in a string of successful films. The partnership with Govinda in Partner, directed by David Dhawan and released on 20 July 2007, was well received, with hit songs like “Do You Wanna Partner,” “Soni De Nakhre,” and “You’re My Love” becoming chart‑toppers.
Vibha Maru, an Assistant Editor with Hindustan Times Entertainment, recounted the story, noting the impact of Govinda’s words on Salman’s career trajectory. The conversation, which took place before the first day of shooting, is remembered as a pivotal moment that helped the superstar regain his footing and eventually secure a decade of success in the film industry.
