Shakeel Noorani Arrested; Alleged Rape of 33-Year-Old Actor

Film director Shakeel Noorani, 73, was taken into custody in Mumbai after a 33‑year‑old actor filed a complaint alleging that she was raped at Noorani’s Malwani residence. The actor says she was invited to the director’s home under the pretext of discussing a new film project, where she was allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted.

According to the police report, Noorani allegedly threatened the actor after the incident. Following the filing of the complaint, authorities registered a case and arrested the veteran filmmaker. He was produced before the Borivali Holiday Court, which has ordered that he remain in police custody until August 12 while investigators gather further evidence.

The case remains under investigation and no formal charges have yet been established in court. Noorani, known for his work as a writer, producer and director in Hindi cinema, has directed films such as Bade Dilwala (1999) and Joru Ka Ghulam (2000). The allegations have thrust the 73‑year‑old director into the spotlight as the police probe continues.

Investigators will examine statements and other evidence related to the complaint. Noorani’s custody is scheduled to continue until August 12, after which he is expected to appear before the court again to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault at his Malwani home.
