Emraan Hashmi Not Playing Mehmood in RD Burman Biopic; Clarifies Reports Are Untrue

Emraan Hashmi has taken to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to set the record straight after a wave of rumors claimed he would portray veteran actor Mehmood in an upcoming biopic about legendary composer R. D. Burman. In his post, Hashmi made it clear that he has never been approached for the role and that the reports are entirely false.

According to the actor, “Just to clarify, the reports about me playing Mehmood saab in a biopic are untrue. I haven’t been approached for the film, nor am I doing it.” The clarification came only hours after the story first surfaced, prompting the actor to dismiss the speculation outright.

The biopic, which is slated to begin production in September, will explore the close friendship and creative partnership between Burman—known worldwide as Pancham Da—and the late actor Mehmood. While the official casting list has yet to be released, reports suggest Farhan Akhtar will take on the role of the composer, with Neeraj Pandey at the helm. The film also reportedly plans to feature Akshay Kumar as Rajesh Khanna, Burman’s late father‑in‑law, highlighting the duo’s historic collaborations.

Meanwhile, Hashmi remains busy with his own projects. He is currently awaiting the theatrical release of “Awarapan 2,” the sequel to his 2007 cult hit. The new film, produced by Vishesh Bhatt and written by Bilal Siddiqui under the banner of Vishesh Films, will see Hashmi return as Shivam Pandit. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the sequel promises a blend of high‑octane action, emotional storytelling, and a soundtrack that stays true to the original’s spirit. “Awarapan 2” is scheduled to hit cinemas worldwide on August 14, 2026.
