Nick Reiner indicted for parents' murder; faces death penalty

Nick Reiner, the son of famed filmmaker Rob Reiner, has been formally charged with the murders of his parents, Rob and his wife Michele, who were stabbed to death in their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025. A Los Angeles County grand jury returned an indictment on July 20, 2025, which was unsealed on Wednesday, and the indictment was subsequently presented to the court on February 23, 2026. The indictment alleges that Nick was “lying in wait” before attacking his parents, implying premeditation and making him eligible for the death penalty under California law.

The case has unfolded with little public disclosure. Nick was arrested within hours of the murders and formally charged two days later. The grand jury, which had met in secret, took a major step by issuing the indictment, allowing prosecutors to bypass the state’s preliminary hearing process. District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the indictment as a “profound betrayal” and said it brings the city closer to justice. No motive has been publicly disclosed, and leaks from either side have been minimal.

Rob Reiner, a celebrated director, actor, and television icon, is best known for classics such as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men, and When Harry Met Sally. He met his wife, Michele, on the set of the latter film, and the couple had three children, with Nick being the second. The tragedy has left the family devastated, with Nick’s older brother Jake describing the loss as a “living nightmare” that is “too devastating to comprehend.”

In addition to the criminal charges, Nick Reiner is currently seeking unpaid funds from a trust his parents had established for him. He claims the money is needed to support his defense, and a hearing on the petition is scheduled for next week. The case remains under close scrutiny as the legal process moves forward.
