Anurag Kashyap Admits Age-Shaming Fears in Decade-Long Romance; Plans Marriage with Shubhra

Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap has confirmed that he has been in a relationship with Shubhra Shetty for almost ten years, a partnership that has survived public scrutiny over their 20‑year age gap. In a recent interview with Janice Sequeira, the filmmaker explained that he feels at peace with the long‑term romance and that the couple has largely moved beyond the age‑shaming that once followed them.

When asked whether the two plan to tie the knot, Kashyap revealed that Shetty does not believe in marriage. He added, “I’m very happy to be with her. I want to be with her. So, whatever that takes. There’s a lot in life. What is an old man’s insecurity? I want to be healthy enough to outlive the people I love. Because if it doesn’t happen, then what can happen after that? The ways of the world. So, I think about it a lot. But my thing is, as long as we have found what we have found now, I’m happy with anything. I don’t want to lose this.”

Shetty recalled a moment early in their relationship when she casually mentioned that being in love was on her bucket list and that she could happily die after experiencing it. Kashyap was moved to tears, telling her that before meeting her he had never feared death or cared about a car accident. He said that, for the first time, he had found something worth living for and therefore did not want to die. Shetty described the exchange as “the sweetest way of looking at their relationship.”

While Kashyap, now 53, acknowledges that the couple has faced “a share of troubles,” he says the age‑shaming has faded. He explained that he had become increasingly self‑conscious as he grew older and Shetty’s appearance remained unchanged, prompting him to “push it away.” Shetty is in her 30s, and the two first met publicly in 2015, though Kashyap only admitted to the relationship in a 2018 interview.

Prior to his current partnership, Kashyap was married to editor Aarti Bajaj; the couple divorced in 2009 after six years and share a daughter, Aaliyah. He later married actress Kalki Koechlin in 2011, but the marriage ended after four years. Shetty had previously worked as an assistant director at Kashyap’s production company, Phantom Films, before their romance began. The filmmaker’s candid comments highlight a shift in his perspective on love, age, and the future of their relationship.
