Adam Driver Cast as Sinister X-Men Villain; Reboot Arrives in 2028

At Disney’s D23 fan event held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Marvel Studios unveiled a new lineup for its upcoming X‑Men reboot, slated for release in May 2028. The most headline‑grabbing announcement was that Adam Driver will portray the notorious villain Mister Sinister, while Indie Navarrette, known for her breakout role in the series Obsession, will take on the part of Rogue.

Other key cast members were revealed on the same night: Christopher Abbott, Driver’s co‑star from the film Girls, will play Professor Charles Xavier; Maya Boyd will portray Storm; Samara Weaving will appear as Emma Frost; Kit Connor will play Scott “Cyclops” Summers; and Sadie Sink will assume the role of Jean Grey, a character she first hinted at in the recent Marvel hit Spider‑Man: Brand New Day. The ensemble, many of whom had never met before the ceremony, was introduced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who highlighted the historic nature of the X‑Men’s integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s 2019 acquisition of Fox’s film assets.

During the presentation, Driver addressed a crowd of 12,000 via video, expressing his excitement about joining the MCU. He initially joked about playing Magneto before correcting himself, announcing instead that he would portray Mister Sinister, a character also known as Nathaniel Millbury. Feige noted that the cast members were meeting backstage for the very first time, underscoring the fresh dynamic of the new team.

The reboot is directed by Jake Schreier, with a script being crafted by Lee Sung‑Jin, creator of Beef, and Joanna Calo, co‑showrunner of The Bear. The film’s production marks a significant expansion of the X‑Men franchise within the MCU, bringing together a mix of seasoned actors and rising stars.

In addition to the X‑Men news, the D23 event also covered other Disney projects. Ryan Gosling and director Shawn Levy presented their upcoming Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled for a May 2027 release. Gosling reflected on his long relationship with Disney, while Levy showcased a leather jacket featuring the skull-and-bones symbol of his character Kade Auberon.
