Hayden Panettiere, the actress best known for her starring roles in the television series Heroes and Nashville, died at the age of 36. The 36‑year‑old was announced dead by her father, Skip Panettiere, in a statement released to ABC News on Sunday. In the statement, he described his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
Law enforcement officials told TMZ that police responded to an incident involving Panettiere on Sunday, and an investigation is still underway. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed publicly, though a source close to the actress mentioned that she had complained of back pain for the past year.
Panettiere was open about her long‑standing battles with mental health and substance addiction. In a 2022 interview with People, she reflected on a period of self‑destruction and recovery, saying, “I was on top of the world and I ruined it. I’d think I hit rock bottom, but then there’s that trap door that opens. I put a lot of work into myself and I had to be willing to be incredibly honest.” She also spoke candidly about severe postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter, Kaya, with her former fiancé, former professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, released on May 19, Panettiere described the emotional toll of motherhood: “I wasn’t OK. I had to figure out how to bond with her. It felt like an insurmountable task, and I was only on the first day.” She added, “It wasn’t panic that was sitting in my chest. It was nothing. A total blackout of emotion, like my soul was dead.”
Panettiere’s career spanned more than two decades, beginning in 1996. Her credits include the voice of Dot in A Bug’s Life, roles in Remember the Titans and Scream VI, and her breakout performance as a cheerleader with superpowers in Heroes, a show that became famous for its mantra, “Save the cheerleader, save the world.”
