Mahershala Ali has publicly criticized Marvel Studios for shelving the highly anticipated Blade reboot, a project that was announced at Comic-Con in 2019 and had seen the actor make a cameo as the titular vampire hunter in the 2021 film Eternals. The actor, who has been promoting his new film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother directed by Bassam Tariq, said in a recent interview with GQ that the Blade project “fell apart” and that the opportunity to work on his current film was a direct result of that failure.
Ali explained that he had spent more than a year training for Blade, but when the project stalled, he was able to redirect those efforts toward the new film. He added that while he had no ill will toward Marvel, the company’s decision to abandon the reboot left him feeling “creatively redeemed” by moving on to a project that was more aligned with his artistic goals.
The Blade reboot had originally been announced with Tariq as director, but he was later replaced by Yann Demange. Despite years of pre‑production, the film never entered production, and by 2025 rumors of its cancellation began to circulate. Marvel’s lack of updates on a release date and a statement from studio boss Kevin Feige last month confirmed that the project was indeed shelved.
Feige, speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, admitted that the studio had not been able to bring the film to life because it did not meet the company’s high standards. He said, “We didn’t want to simply put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique. It fell into the time when we started pulling back and saying, ‘Only accept insanely great.’ And it wasn’t ‘insanely great’ at the time.”
Ali’s comments highlight the tension between creative ambition and corporate decision‑making in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While he remains respectful of the studio’s financial resources, he emphasized that the Blade project was not the right fit for him, stating, “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So we’re not doing the movie.”
