Suriya Breaks Silence on Karuppu Release Delay; Thanks Jyotika for Support

In a candid interview with THR India, superstar Suriya addressed the recent hiccup that delayed the theatrical release of his film Karuppu. The movie, originally slated for a May 14 premiere, was pulled from theatres at the last minute and only managed to screen the following day. Despite the setback, the film went on to become a commercial hit.

During the conversation, Suriya spoke about the financial strain that the delay imposed on him. He revealed that he had taken out additional loans to cover the unforeseen costs, a decision that was supported by his wife, actress Jyotika. “It was a lot of financial burden on me which came on last minute and for me to take those extra loans. She was trusting me and allowing me to take the risk of loans,” Suriya explained. He added that the couple shared the responsibility and that such situations, while rare, can be challenging even for seasoned industry veterans.

Jyotika, who declined to accept the praise, emphasized that the film’s success was a joint effort. “This was completely his work. But we do everything together, even when we are parenting we are always on the same side of the page we never really discuss… here it was completely his generosity and him wanting to make the film work its way out,” she said, underscoring the partnership that kept the project afloat.

The postponement was attributed to a mix of “unforeseen reasons” and financial complications, as reported by theatres across the state. The Statesman highlighted that the production house, Dream Warrior Pictures, had an outstanding debt of ₹10 crore, which delayed the release of the Key Delivery Message (KDM) – the digital key required for theatrical screenings. Additionally, the company reportedly owes ₹50 crore to various creditors, including EVP Studios in Chennai where part of the film was shot. These unpaid dues have created a bottleneck, preventing the film from returning to screens.

Director RJ Balaji, who co‑wrote the screenplay with Rathna Kumar, Ashwin Ravichandran, Rahul Raj, TS Gopi Krishnan, and Karan Aravind Kumar, is hopeful that Karuppu will resume screenings from 6 PM on Thursday. However, the exact date of its re‑release remains uncertain as the team awaits clearance from creditors.

Starring Suriya as the titular guardian deity Karuppusamy, the film also features Trisha Krishnan, Balaji, Indrans, Anagha Maya Ravi, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada, and Supreeth Reddy. Sai Abhyankar composed the music, while the film’s narrative revolves around a deity who assumes human form to confront a corrupt lawyer named Baby.
