Actor R Madhavan has made it clear that he has no intention of stepping into politics, even as his close friend Vijay has just been elected chief minister of Tamil Nadu. The conversation came during an interview with filmmaker KS Ravikumar, conducted to promote Madhavan’s forthcoming film GDN, which is set to hit theatres on August 7 and tells the story of Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu.
When asked about the political climate in Tamil Nadu following Vijay’s victory, Madhavan said that “a lot of good things are happening.” He praised the rapid change in the state’s leadership and expressed pride that a fellow actor had ascended to such a powerful position, adding that the experience has given him confidence that change is possible. “I know Vijay very well. I can proudly say that my friend Vijay has become CM Vijay,” he told Ravikumar.
The interview also touched on the previous ruling party, the DMK, and its deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. Madhavan recalled watching the young Udhayanidhi as a child and noted his rise to prominence, saying, “If the politics is healthy and they do good for the people, then I’ll be really happy.” He mentioned the actor’s son, Inban, as a point of reference for the new generation of political figures.
When Ravikumar suggested that Madhavan might be interested in politics, the actor shut down the notion immediately. He stated, “Absolutely no interest.” Madhavan explained that he prefers to serve society in his own way rather than seek authority, saying, “I don’t want to lead the people and become the Chief Minister. I am selfish that way.” He added that he would continue doing the good work he knows, while respecting the democratically elected leaders.
In summary, R Madhavan celebrates Vijay’s electoral success but remains firmly focused on his film career and personal contribution to society. He has made it clear that politics is a double‑edged sword and that he does not wish to be part of that arena, even as his friend takes the helm of Tamil Nadu’s government.
