Sunny Deol’s long‑anticipated film Batwara 1947 has officially received its censor certificate, a move that surprised many because the certification was granted more than a month before the movie’s release date. According to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) website, the film was handed an ‘A’ rating on July 23, 2024, and is listed at a runtime of 145.34 minutes – roughly two hours, 25 minutes, and 34 seconds.
While Deol’s movies are typically known for their action and violence, they usually target family audiences. Since 2000, only six of his projects have earned an ‘A’ classification: Champion (2000), Farz (2001), Karz: The Burden Of Truth (2002), Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani (2002), Mohalla Assi (2018), and Chup (2022). A 16‑year gap between 2002 and 2018 marked the first time the actor’s work went without an adult rating in over a decade.
Beyond Deol, the ensemble cast includes Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal, and his son Karan Deol. The film reunites Deol with director Rajkumar Santoshi and is produced by Aamir Khan’s production house. Rumours suggest that Khan will also appear in a supporting role, adding another layer of interest for fans.
Adapted from Syed Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, Batwara 1947 tells the story of a Muslim family that migrates from Lucknow to Lahore during the Partition. They are given a haveli once owned by a Hindu family, and the old Hindu matriarch refuses to leave her ancestral home. The narrative explores the unlikely bond that develops between the two families amid the turmoil of 1947.
With its early certification and a star‑studded lineup, Batwara 1947 is poised to generate buzz as it approaches its theatrical release. Fans of Deol and Bollywood history alike will be watching closely to see how the film navigates its adult themes and historical context.
