At San Diego Comic‑Con, the stage was set for a major announcement that could shape the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Oscar‑winning director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that a third Black Panther film is officially underway, with a new actor stepping into the iconic role of T’Challa. The film, slated for a December 15, 2028 release, will see David Jonsson portray Prince T’Challa II, the son and namesake of the late Chadwick Boseman’s original character.
Jonsson’s debut was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience, who erupted in cheers and Wakanda chants as he thanked the “amazing family” he was joining. The announcement also confirmed that Coogler will return as director, while Leticia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri and Winston Duke will return as M’Baku, ensuring continuity with the previous installments.
The new film will follow Jonsson’s character as he comes of age after being introduced as a child in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. That sequel had already honored Boseman’s legacy by shifting focus to Shuri’s rise as Black Panther, a narrative pivot that resonated with audiences worldwide.
Since its 2018 debut, the original Black Panther has amassed a global box‑office haul of $1.3 billion and earned seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture—the first superhero film to achieve that honor. The film went on to win three Oscars for costume design, production design, and original score. Its 2022 sequel surpassed $850 million worldwide and earned Angela Bassett her first Academy Award nomination for a Marvel performance.
Fans across social media have largely welcomed the decision, expressing excitement that the franchise will continue while paying tribute to Boseman’s enduring impact. The announcement marks a new chapter for Wakanda, promising to honor the past while charting a bold future for the Black Panther legacy.
