Ryan Gosling to replace Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider; MCU Debut Confirmed

At San Diego Comic‑Con this week, Marvel Studios announced that Ryan Gosling will take on the role of Johnny Blaze, the iconic Ghost Rider, in a new standalone film. The 45‑year‑old Oscar nominee was revealed during Hall H, a panel dedicated to the MCU’s upcoming projects, and the news sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Gosling will replace Nicolas Cage, who first portrayed the flaming‑skull biker in 2007’s Ghost Rider and returned for the 2011 sequel. The actor’s first superhero outing marks a significant milestone for his career, and Marvel confirmed that the film will be directed by Shawn Levy, who has worked with Gosling on the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter and previously helmed the 2024 Marvel movies Deadpool and Wolverine.

During the panel, Gosling expressed excitement about the character, saying, “As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a long time.” He added that Levy had persuaded him to join the project while they were filming Star Wars: Starfighter, recalling the enthusiasm of the fans they met that night. Levy, in turn, praised Gosling’s talent and hinted that the film would arrive in 2028.

Marvel’s Ghost Rider story follows motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze, who sells his soul to the Devil to save his father, only to lose him in a tragic crash. The bargain forces Blaze to transform into a hellfire‑burning biker, wielding a flaming chain and a Penance Stare that forces victims to feel the pain they inflicted. The film will explore this origin and the character’s supernatural powers.

While the release date remains unannounced, fans can expect the new movie to launch the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, building on the legacy left by Cage’s earlier portrayals and setting the stage for future cross‑overs.
