Ramayana Part One Ends on a Cliffhanger; Releases in November

Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film, Ramayana, is set to hit Indian theatres this November, with the second instalment slated for release next year. The epic tale, which has seen countless adaptations over the past century, will for the first time be presented as a duology on the big screen. Ranbir Kapoor will portray Lord Rama, Yash takes on the role of Ravana, and Sai Pallavi stars as Sita, joined by an ensemble that includes Ravie Dubey, Sunny Deol, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Arun Govil, Vivek Oberoi, and Kunal Kapoor.

The first part of the film concludes on a deliberate cliffhanger, a decision that Tiwari explained during a panel at the San Diego Comic Con. “Ramayana is a linear story, and where we leave off in Part One is something you can call a cliffhanger. It is something that will make people want to watch Part Two the moment they leave the theatre,” he said. The director added that the epic’s length and emotional depth necessitate two parts, and the chosen split will leave audiences eager for the continuation.

In the same interview, Tiwari highlighted the film’s fresh approach, stating that while the story itself is familiar, the execution will be cutting‑edge and emotionally resonant. “At the heart of it, it's all about relationships and the emotions that come with it. That's exactly what we have tried to capture. Along with that, we have given it a cutting‑edge execution. That's what makes it very exciting,” he remarked.

The release schedule places Part One ahead of the Diwali weekend, with Part Two planned for the 2027 Diwali celebrations. The film’s international distribution will be handled by Sony Pictures Entertainment, a partnership announced by producer Namit Malhotra. He noted that the global trailer launch had been postponed indefinitely in light of the deal, promising a worldwide release at a later date.

With a star‑studded cast, a two‑part structure, and a modern take on a classic epic, Ramayana aims to offer audiences a fresh cinematic experience that balances tradition with contemporary storytelling.
