Rohit Saraf to star in Heer Ranjha; begins filming in September

Rohit Saraf is all set to begin shooting the romantic drama Heer Ranjha during the first week of September, according to a report from Variety India. The film will be directed by Sajid Ali, who previously helmed the 2024 release Laila Majnu, and the screenplay has been penned by his brother, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali.

While earlier speculation had pointed to Sara Arjun as the female lead, the production team has decided to bring in a fresh face for the role. This decision comes as the makers finalize the script and casting in the months leading up to the shoot. The announcement of the project was made on Valentine’s Day, a few months after Sajid Ali’s earlier film achieved unexpected success after a re‑release.

Ektaa R Kapoor is producing the film, which retells the classic love story of Heer and Ranjha. The project marks Saraf’s next major romantic outing, following his performances in Dear Zindagi, Ludo, The Sky Is Pink and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. He is currently filming the fourth season of his web series Mismatched alongside Prajkta Koli.

Imtiaz Ali had reportedly stepped away from his own upcoming directorial venture to finish the screenplay for Heer Ranjha before returning to that project. Sajid Ali’s recent work includes the 2024 film Woh Bhi Din The, featuring Saraf, Adarsh Gourav and Sanjana Sanghi, which was released on a streaming platform. Imtiaz Ali’s latest directorial effort, the partition drama Main Vaapas Aaunga, starred Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, Sharvari and Diljit Dosanjh, and received critical acclaim as well as box‑office success.

With cameras set to roll in September, the industry and fans alike are keen to see how the new leading lady is chosen and whether the film can capture the same charm that turned Laila Majnu into a surprise hit after its re‑release last year.
