Katie Holmes backs Suri's name change; daughter drops Cruise surname

Suri Noelle Cruise, the 20‑year‑old daughter of Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, has come back into the public eye after it was revealed that she has legally dropped her father’s surname and taken Noelle—her mother’s middle name—as her last name.

According to a Page Six report, Holmes reacted to the change by saying she fully supports her daughter’s decision to remove the Cruise name. A source quoted by the publication explained, “Katie wasn’t surprised by Suri’s decision to legally drop Cruise from her last name because that’s just who Suri is.” The source added that Suri has always been “incredibly independent and confident in making her own choice,” and that the change “was a decision that evolved over time, and Katie respected Suri’s process every step of the way.” The source emphasized that the move was not something Holmes pushed or encouraged.

“It was entirely Suri’s decision,” the source continued. “Katie has spent years raising Suri to think for herself and become her own person, and she’s incredibly proud of the confident, independent young woman she’s become.”

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes wed in November 2006 and welcomed Suri in April of the same year. The couple filed for divorce in New York on June 28, 2012, ending their five‑and‑a‑half‑year marriage.

On the professional front, Holmes is set to return to the screen with “Happy Hour 2,” while Cruise will next appear in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s forthcoming film, which is currently in production.
