Ramayana trailer sparks controversy; mixed reactions over VFX, casting, and character looks

The trailer for Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming mythological epic Ramayana has sparked a flurry of online discussion, with fans and critics split over its visual effects, casting choices, and character designs. The film, backed by a reported ₹4,000 crore budget, was released on the big screen during Diwali 2026, but the first glimpse has already drawn a mixed reaction from audiences worldwide.

One of the most debated aspects of the trailer is the portrayal of Ravana by actor Yash. Viewers have praised his commanding screen presence, action sequences and dialogue delivery, with many saying he steals the spotlight. Several commenters noted that presenting Ravana as an exceptionally powerful antagonist adds weight to the character and could make the narrative more compelling.

Ranbir Kapoor’s depiction of Lord Rama has also been a point of contention. Some appreciated his understated performance, while others felt his appearance looked too polished for a character who has spent years in exile. Social media users described his look as “plastic” or likened it to a “wax statue,” arguing that a rougher appearance with a beard would have been more convincing.

Sai Pallavi’s casting as Sita has attracted debate as well. Some viewers felt she lacked the traditional aura associated with the character, while others criticised the makeup of both Rama and Sita, saying it looked overly stylised and unnatural. Even before the trailer’s release, some users suggested that actors such as Mrunal Thakur or Deepika Padukone would have been better suited to the role.

Lara Dutta’s appearance as Kaikeyi drew criticism over her costume—a maroon sari paired with a green blouse, loose hair and minimal jewellery—which prompted comparisons to characters commonly seen in Hindi television serials. Vivek Oberoi’s portrayal of Vidyujiva also became a topic of discussion, with several viewers pointing to uneven facial makeup, particularly his moustache. Fans were also disappointed that Sunny Deol, who plays Hanuman, does not appear in the trailer.

Despite the controversies, some social media users urged audiences not to judge the film solely based on its first glimpse, arguing that the final verdict should be reserved until the film’s release. The ensemble cast also includes Shobana as Kaikasi, Ravana’s mother, Arun Govil as King Dasharatha, Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana, Ajinkya Deo as sage Vishwamitra, Kunal Kapoor as Indra and Rakul Preet Singh as Shurpanakha. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is slated for a worldwide theatrical release during Diwali 2026 and is distributed by Sony Pictures.
