Vijay's Jana Nayagan Box Office Struggles; Fails to Touch 200cr Mark

Thalapathy Vijay’s final cinematic outing, Jana Nayagan, hit theatres on 23 July 2026, marking a historic moment as the actor‑turned‑Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu made his first appearance on the big screen in a sitting government role. The political action drama, directed by H Vinoth, was released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and boasted a star‑packed cast that included Pooja Hegde, Priyamani, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Mamitha Baiju, Nassar, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Narain.

Adapted from the Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari, Jana Nayagan opened to enthusiastic reviews and a strong opening weekend, but the momentum stalled in the first week. By the second week, the film struggled to reach the five‑crore mark in a single day, and its morning occupancy on day ten dipped to just 28%, according to a Sacnilk report.

Financially, the film has yet to break the 200‑crore threshold that many fans had hoped for. As of 15:47 IST on Saturday, 1 August, the total gross stood at approximately 165 crore, with an early‑morning tally of two crore by 1:30 pm. Analysts predict a modest uptick for the day, but the outlook remains cautious.

Director H Vinoth praised Vijay’s commitment to social issues, noting that the former superstar “has very good intentions” and genuinely believes in his advocacy for women’s empowerment, safety and anti‑corruption. Despite the political significance and star power, Jana Nayagan has not met box‑office expectations, leaving the 200‑crore mark a distant dream for the film’s stakeholders.
