Malayalam Cinema's Onam Slate; Biggest Box Office Battlegrounds

The upcoming Onam season is set to become a major battleground for Malayalam cinema, with a slate of films spanning thrillers, action, romance, and family dramas. Filmmakers are eager to tap into one of the industry’s most lucrative release windows, and the lineup promises a mix of fresh talent and star power.

Jude Anthany Joseph’s thriller Thudakkam opens on August 7, marking the acting debut of Vismaya Mohanlal, the daughter of legendary actor Mohanlal. Produced by Antony Perumbavoor under Aashirvad Cinemas, the film is written by Joseph, Akhil Krishna and Linish Nellikkal. While the plot remains tightly guarded, the cast includes Ashish Joe Antony, Ganesh Kumar, Sai Kumar, Jaffar Idukki and Boby Kurian in key roles, and Mohanlal is expected to make a special appearance.

On August 20, Vysakh’s action‑drama Khalifa arrives, written by Jinu V Abraham. The story follows Prithviraj Sukumaran as Aamir Ali, heir to a powerful gold‑smuggling empire, who finds himself embroiled in a violent power struggle. The film is billed as the first part of a two‑part saga and features a pivotal cameo by Mohanlal.

Also on August 20, Dulquer Salmaan stars in Nahas Hidhayath’s I’m Game, an action thriller that follows gambler Dan John as he dives into a dangerous criminal underworld. The narrative explores betrayal, revenge and life‑threatening challenges that test the protagonist’s resolve.

The following day, August 21, director Girish A D releases Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, a romantic comedy set in a close‑knit Catholic neighbourhood. The film follows Ashley, who returns from abroad and rekindles memories of her first love, Justin, after a wedding in a neighbouring house. Blending romance, humour and family dynamics, the story examines first love, nostalgia and second chances.
